Small Electrical Jobs in Dartmouth & HRM
One dead outlet. A switch that buzzes. A fixture nobody could reach. Home Style Electric has taken this work since 2009 and still does, across Dartmouth, Halifax and the rest of HRM. Jamie Myatt is a red seal journeyman electrician, and the small jobs are not the leftovers here.
Service calls start at $249.
Which electrical jobs do not need a permit in Nova Scotia?
A short list, and it comes with a condition people miss. The Electrical Code Regulations exempt replacing or repairing devices within certain ratings, installing one new branch circuit within those ratings, replacing light fixtures in a dwelling, replacing motors, and some class II transformer wiring.
The condition is that the work is done by a construction electrician who keeps a record of it. The exemption removes the permit, not the electrician. Our guide on doing your own electrical work in Nova Scotia sets out exactly what the regulation says and where the wording trips people up.
Do I need a permit to add one new outlet?
Generally not, because one new branch circuit inside the rating limits is one of the exempted categories. That is why adding a single plug is a booking rather than a project, and why it does not carry the inspection wait that a panel job does.
Where it stops being exempt is the moment it stops being one circuit. Two or three new circuits for a finished basement, or a kitchen being rewired, is permitted work. If you are not sure which side of the line your job falls on, describe it on the phone and you will get a straight answer before anyone books anything.
What counts as a small job?
Roughly, anything that is one identifiable thing in one place. A dead outlet. A switch replaced with a dimmer. A fixture swapped for one that suits the room. A GFCI fitted where the counter needs one. A plug added in the spot where the lamp cord currently runs under a rug.
What does not fit is anything that turns out to be a symptom rather than a fault. A dead outlet is a small job; a dead outlet that is the third one this year on the same circuit is troubleshooting, which is a different kind of visit and priced as one.
What if the small job turns out to be something bigger?
Sometimes it does, and you get told at the time rather than at the end. A dead outlet that turns out to be a burnt connection in a junction box, or a switch that is warm because of what is behind it rather than the switch itself, stops being a small job the moment it is opened up.
What happens then is a conversation, not an invoice. Jamie will tell you what he has found, what he thinks it involves, and whether it is something to deal with now or to book properly. Nobody starts a bigger job off the back of a small booking without saying so first.
Can one visit cover several small jobs?
Yes, and it is the cheapest way to buy this work. The travel and the setup happen once whether there is one job on the list or five, so a list is better value than a series of single calls spread over a year.
Worth doing before you phone: walk the house and write them all down, including the ones you have stopped noticing. The switch that has always been loose, the fixture in the stairwell nobody can reach, the outlet behind the couch that stopped working at some point. People routinely remember the fourth item after the van has gone.
What it costs
A small job visit starts at $249, the same service call figure as any other callout. The distinction worth understanding is between a job and a diagnosis: if you know what you want done, that is a booking; if something has stopped working and nobody knows why, the finding out is the work.
Jamie does not quote small jobs in writing. That is a deliberate position rather than an oversight, and the reasoning is on the services page: for something straightforward he would rather book it in and get it done than spend an evening writing up an estimate for it.
Permits and inspection in Nova Scotia
Most small work sits inside the exemptions above, so there is usually no permit and no inspection wait. That does not make it work a homeowner can do: the exemption is conditional on a construction electrician doing it and keeping a record, and a permit cannot be issued to a homeowner in any case.
In HRM, permits and inspections come from Nova Scotia Power Inspection Services acting for the province, not from the municipality, and the work is done to the 2024 Canadian Electrical Code. Ontario’s ESA, which most Canadian search results are written around, has no role here.
Questions
Asked Often
Can a handyman do electrical work in Nova Scotia?
No. The Electrical Code Regulations require a permit for electrical work, and a permit can only be issued to an electrical contractor who is or employs a construction electrician. The permit exemptions for small work apply only when a construction electrician does the job and keeps a record of it, so they do not open a door for anyone else.
Is it worth calling out an electrician for one small thing?
It is the thing the company was built on, so yes. Dartmouth being home base is part of why: a single dead outlet across town is a short drive rather than an afternoon. If you have two or three small things, say so on the phone and they get done in the one visit.
Do you give a written quote for small jobs?
Usually not, and Jamie will tell you that himself. For something small he would rather book it in and do it than spend an evening writing it up, which is generally what the customer wanted anyway. Bigger work is different: for a panel or a service upgrade he comes and looks first.
Can you add an outlet where there has never been one?
Usually, and where it can go depends on what is on the other side of the wall and how the house is built. A basement or an unfinished ceiling below makes it straightforward. A finished room on a second storey is a different afternoon. Mention what is above and below when you call.

We hired Jamie's company last year after we bought a new house. The work was to remodel the electric wiring for a large house and install a separate 30 amp panel (to make two services in the house) and convert my old oil/hotwater heating to electric. Jamie and his people did the work very professionally and their price was very fair. He took care of all the communications with NS Power inspectors and made sure the inspection went as smoothly as possible. I also find Jamie is a very honest and kind person. I trust his work. It has been over 15 years since I owned my first house and hired numerous contractors for house fixes. Jamie is the best one.

These guys are good. I have multiple rentals and I only hire Jamie and his guys for my electrical issues. Not once they have disappointed me or my tenants.

Really went above and beyond on my reno. Both Jamie and his apprentice were friendly, honest, neat, and knowledgeable. I'd be as happy to have them over for dinner as I would be to recommend them to friends and family.

I didn't end up requiring their service, but just my interactions with them over the phone, and the way Jamie immediately made room for me in a busy day was very appreciated. While one never wishes for electrical issues, I'll definitely call this company with any future issues that might crop up.
