EV Charger Installation in Dartmouth & Halifax
A car charger draws more than almost anything else in the house, so the load calculation comes before the quote. Home Style Electric installs Level 2 chargers across Dartmouth, Halifax and HRM, and Jamie Myatt is a red seal journeyman electrician who will tell you straight if the panel cannot carry it.
Do I need a panel upgrade to put a charger on 100 amps?
Not always, and this is worth finding out before you buy anything. It depends on what else the house runs: electric heat, an electric range, an electric hot water tank and a dryer together leave much less headroom than oil heat and a gas range do. A load calculation gives you the actual answer for your house rather than a rule of thumb.
Where 100 amps typically runs out is a house with electric heat that is also adding a heat pump, or one where the charger is the second big load to go in this year. The service upgrades page covers what is involved if the answer comes back short.
What is load management, and can it avoid a service upgrade?
Load management is a control system that prevents the charger and the rest of the house from drawing their maximums at the same time, usually by backing the charger off when the house demand rises. The Canadian Electrical Code allows a managed load to be counted differently from an unmanaged one in the calculation, which is the whole point of it.
In practice it is the thing that sometimes turns “you need a service upgrade” into “you do not”. It is not a universal answer, it adds equipment and cost of its own, and whether it works for you comes out of the same load calculation. It is a conversation worth having before you conclude the upgrade is unavoidable.
Is there an EV charger rebate in Nova Scotia in 2026?
Not one we can find for individual homeowners. Efficiency Nova Scotia’s programme list has no home charger rebate on it, checked in September 2026.
This is worth stating plainly because the internet says otherwise. Several blog posts still repeat a $500 Efficiency Nova Scotia charger rebate. It is not on their programmes list. Federal electric vehicle money that does exist is for buying the vehicle, not for the charger, the circuit or any panel work behind it. Our 2026 rebates guide goes through what is genuinely open.
Where should the charger go?
Next to where the car parks, on the side the charge port is on, at a height you can reach with the cable dressed rather than dragging. That sounds obvious and it is the thing most often decided by where the panel happens to be instead.
The electrical question sitting under it is the run length from the panel, which is most of the cost on this job. A garage on the other side of the panel wall is a short job. A charger at the end of a driveway, or in a detached garage, is a different scale of work and belongs with running power to an outbuilding.
When is power cheapest to charge?
Right now there is no cheaper time, because everybody is on the standard rate. Nova Scotia Power’s time-of-use pilot, which would have split winter weekdays into peak and off-peak, is not taking applications and was paused for the 2025-26 winter following the cyber incident, with a resumption anticipated on 1 November 2026.
If that matters to how you plan to charge, it is worth watching their page rather than this one, and worth mentioning when you book, because a charger with scheduling built in is easier to take advantage of it later than one without.
What it costs
Quoted, not charged at the service call rate. The charger and the circuit are usually the predictable part; the cost is driven by the run from the panel and by what the load calculation turns up.
The honest warning is the same one on every page here that touches capacity: if your service cannot carry the charger, the upgrade that makes it possible is a separate and larger job, and no rebate in this province covers it. Finding that out before the charger is ordered turns a surprise into a decision.
Permits and inspection in Nova Scotia
A charger on its own dedicated circuit generally falls inside the single-branch-circuit exemption in the Electrical Code Regulations when a construction electrician does the work and keeps a record. Anything involving the panel or the service is permitted, inspected work. The guide to doing your own electrical work here sets out the exact wording and where it stops.
Permits in HRM come from Nova Scotia Power Inspection Services acting for the province. The standard is the 2024 Canadian Electrical Code, which Nova Scotia adopted with no amendments effective 2 July 2024.
Questions
Asked Often
Hardwired or plug-in, which should I choose?
Plug-in on a suitable receptacle is easier to swap or take with you, and the receptacle itself becomes a maintenance item that lives outdoors or in a garage. Hardwired is one fewer connection to age and is usually the tidier installation. Either is fine done properly; the charger's own instructions often push you one way.
Can the charger go on an existing dryer or range outlet?
Not as a permanent arrangement. Those circuits are sized and protected for an appliance that runs intermittently, not for a car charging for hours at a time, and sharing one is not an installation that passes inspection. It is a dedicated circuit or it is not a charger installation.
Will a charger work outside through a Nova Scotia winter?
Yes, with equipment rated for outdoor use and installed for it. Chargers designed for exterior mounting handle the cold fine. What causes problems is an indoor-rated unit mounted outside, or an installation where water can track into the connection, which is the same failure that takes out outdoor plugs here.
How long does the installation take?
The charger itself is usually a day where the panel has capacity and space and the run is reasonable. What extends it is everything upstream: a full panel, a service that will not carry the load, or a run from the panel to a detached garage. Those are separate jobs that happen first.

We hired Jamie's company last year after we bought a new house. The work was to remodel the electric wiring for a large house and install a separate 30 amp panel (to make two services in the house) and convert my old oil/hotwater heating to electric. Jamie and his people did the work very professionally and their price was very fair. He took care of all the communications with NS Power inspectors and made sure the inspection went as smoothly as possible. I also find Jamie is a very honest and kind person. I trust his work. It has been over 15 years since I owned my first house and hired numerous contractors for house fixes. Jamie is the best one.

Really went above and beyond on my reno. Both Jamie and his apprentice were friendly, honest, neat, and knowledgeable. I'd be as happy to have them over for dinner as I would be to recommend them to friends and family.

I didn't end up requiring their service, but just my interactions with them over the phone, and the way Jamie immediately made room for me in a busy day was very appreciated. While one never wishes for electrical issues, I'll definitely call this company with any future issues that might crop up.
